The most common question about GrapheneOS. We’ve tested every major UK banking app so you don’t have to.
The Short Answer: Yes
With sandboxed Google Play installed, the vast majority of UK banking apps work perfectly on GrapheneOS.
UK Banking Apps Compatibility
Monzo โ works perfectly. Revolut โ works perfectly. Starling Bank โ works without issues. Barclays โ works. HSBC โ works. Lloyds โ works. NatWest โ works. Santander โ works. Halifax โ works. First Direct โ works. Chase UK โ works.
Why Did Banking Apps Fail Before?
Historically, banking apps used Google’s SafetyNet API to check if a device had been “tampered with.” Google replaced SafetyNet with the Play Integrity API, and GrapheneOS’s sandboxed Play implementation passes the basic integrity level that most banking apps require.
What About Google Pay?
Contactless payments via Google Pay are the one notable exception โ Google requires “strong integrity” which needs a Google-certified OS. We recommend using a physical card, or your bank’s own contactless features where available.
The Bottom Line
Banking apps work on GrapheneOS. The days of privacy phones being “incompatible” with everyday apps are over. For the vast majority of UK users, every app they rely on will work.
